According to Mr. Ampem, the new office will play a critical role in ensuring that government contracts deliver real value, going beyond basic procedural checks currently overseen by the Public Procurement Authority. He explained that while the Authority ensures compliance with procurement rules, it does not sufficiently evaluate whether projects are cost-effective.

He noted that the proposed office will focus on life-cycle costing, technical evaluation, and post-contract verification, aimed at ensuring that projects are not only properly awarded but also economically sound throughout their implementation.

Addressing concerns raised by the Minority, Mr. Ampem acknowledged that value-for-money assessments have traditionally been applied more strictly to single-source procurements than to competitively tendered contracts. However, he argued that this gap has allowed inefficiencies and inflated costs to persist in some competitive bids.

He revealed that Ghana previously depended on external expertise, particularly from Crown Agents, to conduct such assessments. With the firm no longer operating in the country, he described the establishment of a local Value for Money Office as both necessary and timely.

Mr. Ampem further rejected the notion that only sole-source contracts are prone to inflated pricing. He pointed out that some competitively awarded contracts have included questionable cost elements, such as expenses for mobile phones, airtime, and hotel accommodation for contractors, which contribute to overall project inflation.

He maintained that the new office would help curb such practices by providing independent scrutiny across all procurement methods, ensuring better use of public funds.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"9";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"423";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"2";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"4";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:47:"Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister of Finance";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";N;s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-03-19 14:58:28";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202603/image_870x580_69bbf7c1a858d.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202603/image_870x_69bbf7c1b566b.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202603/image_694x532_69bbf7c1bf0dd.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202603/image_430x256_69bbf7c1c4b4d.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202603/image_140x98_69bbf7c1c8588.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:8:"Politics";s:13:"category_slug";s:8:"politics";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#2e7d32";s:15:"author_username";s:10:"Mary Adofo";s:11:"author_slug";s:10:"mary-adofo";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:1;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"294";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:67:"Clement Bonney Declares Ambition to Become Ghana’s Next President";s:4:"slug";s:64:"clement-bonney-declares-ambition-to-become-ghanas-next-president";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";N;s:7:"summary";s:224:"Actor Clement Bonney, popularly known as Mr Beautiful, says he hopes to become Ghana’s President in the future. He argues that if the jobs were real, each constituency would see about 3,600 new positions and visible reductions in unemployment.";s:7:"content";s:2184:"
The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Kingsley Agyemang, has cast doubt on President John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that his administration created one million jobs in 2025, arguing that the impact is not visible in communities across the country.

Speaking to party executives in Kyebi, Dr. Agyemang challenged the practicality of the figures, insisting that such a massive number should translate into measurable employment gains nationwide.

“If one million jobs were created, unemployed youth should be able to point to them,” he said. “With 275 constituencies in Ghana, that would mean about 3,600 new jobs per constituency in just one year. Where are they?”

His comments come after President Mahama, in his 2026 State of the Nation Address to Parliament, cited data from the Ghana Statistical Service to support claims that government policies were reducing unemployment through industrial expansion, support for small and medium enterprises, and the rollout of a 24-hour economy policy.

However, Dr. Agyemang argued that national statistics alone are insufficient. According to him, job creation should be reflected in tangible outcomes — graduates entering the workforce, young people securing stable employment, and businesses visibly expanding their staff strength.

He maintained that many young people, particularly in his Abuakwa South constituency, continue to struggle to find sustainable work. If one million jobs had indeed been created, he contended, communities would already be experiencing clear improvements in household incomes and reduced unemployment levels.

The MP is therefore calling for greater transparency, demanding a detailed sector-by-sector breakdown of the jobs reportedly created, including clarity on whether they are permanent or temporary and how they are distributed across the country.

Dr. Agyemang stressed that Ghanaians want more than headline figures — they want concrete evidence in their daily lives. Until the government provides comprehensive data showing how the jobs are spread across all constituencies, he insists the claim remains open to question.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"9";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"398";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"1";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"4";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:17:"Kingsley Agyemang";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";N;s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-03-04 10:42:30";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202603/image_870x580_69a80c40d99ff.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202603/image_870x_69a80c40e3507.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202603/image_694x532_69a80c40ecbd0.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202603/image_430x256_69a80c40f2429.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202603/image_140x98_69a80c41013c2.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:8:"Politics";s:13:"category_slug";s:8:"politics";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#2e7d32";s:15:"author_username";s:10:"Mary Adofo";s:11:"author_slug";s:10:"mary-adofo";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:3;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"291";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:82:"Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed Wins Ayawaso East By-Election in Decisive Victory";s:4:"slug";s:82:"alhaji-mohammed-baba-jamal-ahmed-wins-ayawaso-east-by-election-in-decisive-victory";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";N;s:7:"summary";s:150:"Baba Jamal of the NDC has won the Ayawaso East by-election with 63% of the vote, defeating his NPP and LPG opponents to retain the seat for his party.";s:7:"content";s:930:"
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat after its candidate, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, secured a commanding victory in the by-election.

Rather than questioning Nkrumah’s role in securing Ghana’s independence, Paul Adom Otchere challenged the tendency to present the late President as flawless. He argued that Ghana’s history must be examined in full, including decisions and policies that limited political freedoms during the early years of nationhood.

Central to his critique was the issue of political intolerance, particularly the suppression of opposing voices and the use of state power to silence critics. He also highlighted preventive detention measures, describing them as actions that weakened civil liberties and set troubling precedents for governance.

Paul Adom Otchere further raised concerns about power concentration under Nkrumah’s administration, noting that excessive central control reduced institutional independence and contributed to political tension. On the economic front, he suggested that some ambitious state programmes were pursued without sufficient safeguards, creating pressures that affected long-term stability.

Despite these criticisms, the broadcaster acknowledged that Nkrumah’s influence on Ghana and Africa remains undeniable. He pointed to achievements in education, infrastructure, and Pan-African advocacy, stressing that criticism should not be mistaken for dismissal of Nkrumah’s historic impact.

In separate assessments, three political experts have identified governance record, credibility, party unity and public trust as the critical factors that will shape the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

Political scientist Dr John Osae-Kwapong says while Dr Bawumia’s early nomination gives the party ample time to organise, the NPP must confront public perceptions of its previous administration. According to him, economic hardship experienced by many Ghanaians during the party’s last term remains fresh in voters’ minds and cannot be ignored.

He notes that the party’s ability to acknowledge past challenges and clearly communicate lessons learned will be crucial in rebuilding confidence among undecided voters.

For Dr Gbensuglo Alidu Bukari, Head of Political Science at the University for Development Studies, the early selection of a flagbearer presents both an opportunity and a risk. He explains that the long campaign period allows the NPP to rebuild its grassroots base and refine its message, but also exposes the candidate to prolonged public scrutiny and political attacks.

Dr Bukari adds that credibility will be central to the campaign, stressing that voters will expect clear and practical solutions to issues such as unemployment, cost of living and economic recovery.

Pollster Mussa Dankwah of Global InfoAnalytics highlights the importance of public trust, noting that internal party unity alone will not guarantee electoral success. He explains that national elections are determined by the broader electorate, not party delegates, and that current public sentiment suggests the NPP must work harder to reconnect with voters who feel disillusioned.

According to him, data from previous elections shows that parties that fail to address voter concerns early often struggle to recover momentum closer to election day.

The experts agree that the NPP’s chances in 2028 will depend largely on how effectively it rebuilds trust, manages internal cohesion and presents a convincing vision for Ghana’s future. As preparations begin in earnest, they caution that performance, not promises, will ultimately shape voter decisions.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"9";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"299";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"0";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"4";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:47:"NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";N;s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-02-03 10:56:38";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202602/image_870x580_6981d3a54e131.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202602/image_870x_6981d3a56a18c.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202602/image_694x532_6981d3a5836d4.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202602/image_430x256_6981d3a593854.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202602/image_140x98_6981d3a5a1185.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:8:"Politics";s:13:"category_slug";s:8:"politics";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#2e7d32";s:15:"author_username";s:10:"Mary Adofo";s:11:"author_slug";s:10:"mary-adofo";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:14;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"217";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:61:"Bawumia Sweeps NPP Headquarters Polling Centre with 308 Votes";s:4:"slug";s:61:"bawumia-sweeps-npp-headquarters-polling-centre-with-308-votes";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";N;s:7:"summary";N;s:7:"content";s:1135:"

He disclosed that ballot papers, the electoral roll (album), and other essential logistics had already been successfully dispatched to all constituencies nationwide, ensuring readiness ahead of voting day.

“We are confident that all systems are in place for a smooth process,” he noted.

Results to be declared at polling centres

Mr Osei-Owusu explained that the results would be announced and declared at the polling centres, where votes obtained by each presidential aspirant would be openly recorded in the presence of agents and observers.

He added that after the declaration, ballot papers would be sealed and transported to the district election offices, while results would be transmitted to the regional offices for collation.

The PEC Chair said the step-by-step process was designed to minimise disputes, prevent manipulation, and ensure accountability at every stage of the election.

Party unity and credibility at stake

The NPP primary is expected to be a defining moment for the party as it begins preparations for the 2028 general election. Party leaders have repeatedly called on aspirants, delegates, and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and place the party’s unity above individual ambitions.

Mr Osei-Owusu emphasised that the PEC remains committed to upholding the party’s democratic values and ensuring that the will of the delegates reflects the final outcome.

With over 211,000 delegates set to vote, the election is one of the largest internal party contests in Ghana’s political history, and its conduct is expected to shape public perception of the NPP ahead of the next national polls.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"9";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"249";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"1";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"4";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:70:"Kennedy Agyapong, Adutwum, Bawumia, Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Agyepong";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";s:19:"2026-01-27 15:09:19";s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-01-27 15:08:43";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202601/image_870x580_69738ea5abdbe.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202601/image_870x_69738ea5c7d34.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202601/image_694x532_69738ea5d6419.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202601/image_430x256_69738ea5e1841.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202601/image_140x98_69738ea5e9fb7.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:8:"Politics";s:13:"category_slug";s:8:"politics";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#2e7d32";s:15:"author_username";s:10:"Mary Adofo";s:11:"author_slug";s:10:"mary-adofo";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:17;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"199";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:89:"Minority Attributes Ghana’s Economic Recovery to IMF Support, Not Government Management";s:4:"slug";s:85:"minority-attributes-ghanas-economic-recovery-to-imf-support-not-government-management";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";N;s:7:"summary";s:176:"The Minority in Parliament says Ghana’s recent economic gains are driven by IMF support, debt relief, and rising commodity exports, not the current government’s management.";s:7:"content";s:840:"

He said the issue arose when Kennedy Ohene Agyapong objected to Clause 2 of the MoU, which requires all aspirants to accept the results of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026, regardless of the outcome.

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a high-level Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE) as part of efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and accelerate inclusive economic growth.

According to the release, the establishment of PAGE underscores President Mahama’s resolve to draw on both national and international expertise to strengthen economic governance, improve strategic policy coordination, and promote evidence-based decision-making in addressing Ghana’s current economic challenges.

The Advisory Group will serve as a non-partisan, high-level body providing independent strategic advice directly to the President. Its mandate includes offering guidance on macroeconomic management, fiscal consolidation, debt sustainability, and ensuring coherence between fiscal and monetary policies.

PAGE is also expected to advise on structural transformation, industrial development, competitiveness, and export-led growth strategies, while supporting private sector expansion, investment mobilisation, and sustainable job creation.

Additionally, the Group will play a role in supporting the design and implementation of major government programmes, including the 24-Hour Economy, productivity-enhancing reforms, and the Accelerated Export Development Programme. It will periodically assess Ghana’s economic performance and recommend policy adjustments where necessary.

The Advisory Group will further contribute expert input to Ghana’s economic negotiations and partnerships with bilateral and multilateral development partners, international financial institutions, and investors.

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has firmly dismissed calls for his exit from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting he remains a loyal member and has no intention of leaving.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said attempts by the party’s leadership to intimidate or expel him would not succeed, stressing that those he described as “fake” members should rather vacate the party.

His comments come amid reports that the NPP has begun processes to sanction him over remarks considered harmful to party unity. Party officials have described his statements as reckless and inconsistent with the conduct expected of senior party members.

A majority of Ghanaians support proposals to extend the country’s presidential term from four to five years, according to findings from a nationwide poll conducted by research firm Global InfoAnalytics.

The survey, which aligns with recommendations contained in the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) report, found that more than half of respondents are in favour of a single five-year term for the presidency. Supporters argue that the extension would give presidents adequate time to implement policies without the pressure of frequent elections.

However, a significant number of respondents expressed opposition to the proposal, citing concerns about accountability and the risk of power concentration. A small portion of participants also indicated they were undecided.

Beyond the presidential term debate, the poll revealed public backing for several other constitutional reforms proposed by the CRC. These include separating the roles of Members of Parliament from ministerial appointments and reducing the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates.

The survey was conducted nationwide using a combination of face-to-face interviews, telephone calls, and online questionnaires, with thousands of registered voters participating.
