President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will not sponsor Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, the decision is necessary to ensure that public funds are used responsibly, especially at a time when the country faces pressing economic demands.

Speaking during the launch of a World Cup fundraising initiative, President Mahama stated, “Government will not use taxpayers’ money to fly fans to the World Cup.”

He explained that the cost involved in sponsoring supporters is too high and cannot be justified under current circumstances.

He revealed that sending just a small group of about 200 fans could cost as much as $2 million, adding that such an amount could be better invested in sectors that directly benefit citizens.

“We have more urgent priorities like job creation and improving livelihoods,” he emphasized.

The President also referenced recommendations from the Dzamefe Report, which advised against government spending on fan travel.

Despite the government’s stance, efforts are underway by private individuals and organizations to raise funds to support some fans who wish to travel and support the national team at the tournament, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"7";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"424";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"3";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"3";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:29:"President John Dramani Mahama";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";N;s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-03-21 15:46:23";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202603/image_870x580_69beaf8a43765.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202603/image_870x_69beaf8a4ce83.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202603/image_694x532_69beaf8a55cdd.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202603/image_430x256_69beaf8a5bbbb.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202603/image_140x98_69beaf8a5eb8a.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:6:"Sports";s:13:"category_slug";s:6:"sports";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#ef6b00";s:15:"author_username";s:12:"Hilda Appiah";s:11:"author_slug";s:12:"hilda-appiah";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:1;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"309";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:34:"94 Days to the FIFA World Cup 2026";s:4:"slug";s:34:"94-days-to-the-fifa-world-cup-2026";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";N;s:7:"summary";N;s:7:"content";s:1308:"
Only 94 days remain until the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — set to be the biggest edition of the tournament in history ⚽🌍

Withdrawal from the tournament would likely mean forfeiting guaranteed participation earnings, preparation grants, and other financial benefits allocated to qualified teams. FIFA distributes substantial funds to national associations to cover training camps, logistics, and operational costs ahead of the global showpiece.

Beyond losing tournament revenue, Iran could also face additional fines depending on when a withdrawal decision is made. Regulations typically impose stricter penalties the closer a team pulls out to the start of the competition, due to scheduling, broadcasting, and sponsorship implications.

The global governing body, FIFA, retains sole discretion in determining any replacement should a qualified nation withdraw. That decision could significantly impact group-stage dynamics and qualification pathways for other teams.

The move recalls historical boycotts by European and African nations, highlighting the persistent intersection of politics and football.";s:7:"content";s:2431:"
As the world prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, geopolitical tensions are once again threatening to overshadow the sport. Iran’s national football federation has hinted at a possible withdrawal from the tournament following recent military escalations in the Middle East, raising fresh concerns about security and participation.

Reports indicate that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in recent strikes, alongside top political and military figures. In the wake of this, the federation has expressed serious doubts about sending its team to the tournament, citing safety concerns and uncertainty about international travel. Iran is drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with matches scheduled in U.S. cities — a factor complicated by diplomatic tensions.

The situation has revived memories of past World Cup boycotts, showing that political disputes have long intersected with football:

England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland (1934): None of the British teams participated in the tournament in Italy, feeling their domestic competitions were more prestigious.

African Boycott (1966): African nations collectively withdrew in protest of unfair qualifying rules imposed by FIFA, influenced by European dominance in football governance.

European Calls in 2026: Early discussions in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK suggested possible boycotts over international political disputes, though no official withdrawals occurred.

These historical examples show that withdrawals and boycotts, while rare, have often been a tool for nations to make political statements or protect national interests. Iran’s potential absence would mark a significant moment, blending sport and geopolitics on a global stage.

FIFA has reiterated its commitment to having all qualified teams participate in the tournament, emphasizing that the World Cup should remain separate from political disputes. However, analysts warn that Iran’s withdrawal, if confirmed, could set a new precedent and fuel debate over the intersection of politics and international sport.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has withdrawn its recognition of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) and its Executive Council, effective January 7, 2026, citing concerns regarding governance and accountability.

In a press release issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, the NSA stated that the action was taken after the GSA failed to comply with provisions of its own constitution and/or re-audited accounts, and provided satisfactory responses to issues raised by the Authority.

The NSA also confirmed that it has formally notified World Aquatics (WA), the global governing body for aquatic sports, about the withdrawal of recognition.

As a result of the decision, the GSA and its Executive Council are no longer permitted to oversee aquatic sports activities in Ghana. This includes organising national competitions, selecting athletes for international events, and conducting any aquatic sports-related activities both within and outside the country.

Additionally, members of the GSA Executive Council have been barred from representing Ghana in any aquatic sports functions, whether at the national or international level.

The NSA clarified, however, that the withdrawal of recognition does not amount to a total ban on swimming in Ghana. Swimming clubs, training sessions, and competitions not directly organised by the GSA are expected to continue uninterrupted.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to promoting, organising, and supporting the development of aquatic sports, while enforcing principles of accountability, transparency, fairness, and good governance.

According to the NSA, the action forms part of broader efforts to reset aquatic sports in Ghana in the interest of all stakeholders, particularly athletes and the general public.
";s:11:"category_id";s:1:"7";s:8:"image_id";s:3:"193";s:12:"optional_url";N;s:9:"pageviews";s:1:"2";s:13:"comment_count";s:1:"0";s:9:"need_auth";s:1:"0";s:12:"slider_order";s:1:"1";s:14:"featured_order";s:1:"1";s:12:"is_scheduled";s:1:"0";s:10:"visibility";s:1:"1";s:17:"show_right_column";s:1:"1";s:9:"post_type";s:7:"article";s:10:"video_path";N;s:13:"video_storage";s:5:"local";s:9:"image_url";N;s:9:"video_url";N;s:16:"video_embed_code";N;s:7:"user_id";s:1:"3";s:6:"status";s:1:"1";s:7:"feed_id";N;s:8:"post_url";N;s:13:"show_post_url";s:1:"0";s:17:"image_description";s:18:"NSA, press release";s:17:"show_item_numbers";s:1:"0";s:14:"is_poll_public";s:1:"1";s:15:"link_list_style";s:156:"a:3:{i:1;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:2;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}i:3;a:2:{s:5:"style";s:4:"none";s:6:"status";i:0;}}";s:11:"recipe_info";N;s:9:"post_data";N;s:10:"updated_at";s:19:"2026-01-20 01:07:47";s:10:"created_at";s:19:"2026-01-19 20:48:25";s:10:"image_data";s:337:"img_bg::uploads/images/202601/image_870x580_696e98586479b.jpg||img_df::uploads/images/202601/image_870x_696e98588297e.jpg||img_sl::uploads/images/202601/image_694x532_696e985899606.jpg||img_md::uploads/images/202601/image_430x256_696e9858ac603.jpg||img_sm::uploads/images/202601/image_140x98_696e9858bee0a.jpg||img_mi::jpg||img_st::local";s:13:"category_name";s:6:"Sports";s:13:"category_slug";s:6:"sports";s:14:"category_color";s:7:"#ef6b00";s:15:"author_username";s:12:"Hilda Appiah";s:11:"author_slug";s:12:"hilda-appiah";s:15:"lang_short_form";s:2:"en";}i:14;O:8:"stdClass":45:{s:2:"id";s:3:"126";s:7:"lang_id";s:1:"1";s:5:"title";s:87:"Ghanaian Referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea Appointed for Morocco–Nigeria AFCON Semi-Final";s:4:"slug";s:84:"ghanaian-referee-daniel-nii-ayi-laryea-appointed-for-morocconigeria-afcon-semi-final";s:10:"title_hash";N;s:8:"keywords";s:132:"Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, AFCON semi-final, Morocco vs Nigeria, CAF referees, Ghana referee, AFCON 2026, Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium";s:7:"summary";s:323:"Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea has been appointed by CAF to officiate the AFCON semi-final between Morocco and Nigeria in Rabat.
The 36-year-old former world champion was involved in a serious car crash on December 29 while travelling in a black Lexus SUV on a major highway in Nigeria. Reports indicate that the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua survived the accident with minor injuries, two of his companions, Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives at the scene.

The incident has deeply affected the boxer, who later described the deceased as more than friends, referring to them as brothers who played significant roles in his personal and professional life.

However, no official statement confirming retirement has been issued by Joshua himself.

His promoter and members of his management team have since urged caution, indicating that discussions about Joshua’s career are premature as he continues to grieve and recover from the ordeal.

Joshua, a two-time former heavyweight champion, has been one of boxing’s most recognisable figures over the past decade, with multiple world titles and headline bouts to his name. Any decision regarding his future in the sport is expected to come directly from the boxer after a period of reflection.

The Gabon government has taken the drastic step of suspending the entire national football team (the Panthers) following their poor showing at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco.
On January 1, 2026, acting Sports Minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula announced on national television that the team’s performance was “disgraceful” and damaging to national values and ethics.
Key Details:
Gabon finished bottom of Group F with 0 points and three straight defeats (no wins, no draws).
Losses to Cameroon, Mozambique, and defending champions Ivory Coast (3-2 after leading 2-0).
The government has also dissolved the technical staff (including head coach Thierry Mouyouma).
Two senior players are banned from future selection:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (all-time top scorer)
Bruno Ecuele Manga (most-capped player and former captain)
Aubameyang reacted on social media:
“I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am.”
This is a rare case of direct government intervention in football — it could risk FIFA or CAF sanctions for political interference, but the decision stands for now.
Fans are divided: some say it’s needed accountability after the humiliation, others call it too harsh on the players.
