The Gabon government has taken the drastic step of suspending the entire national football team (the Panthers) following their poor showing at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco.
On January 1, 2026, acting Sports Minister Simplice-Désiré Mamboula announced on national television that the team’s performance was “disgraceful” and damaging to national values and ethics.
Key Details:
Gabon finished bottom of Group F with 0 points and three straight defeats (no wins, no draws).
Losses to Cameroon, Mozambique, and defending champions Ivory Coast (3-2 after leading 2-0).
The government has also dissolved the technical staff (including head coach Thierry Mouyouma).
Two senior players are banned from future selection:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (all-time top scorer)
Bruno Ecuele Manga (most-capped player and former captain)
Aubameyang reacted on social media:
“I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am.”
This is a rare case of direct government intervention in football — it could risk FIFA or CAF sanctions for political interference, but the decision stands for now.
Fans are divided: some say it’s needed accountability after the humiliation, others call it too harsh on the players.
